snow on snow

“The White Veil” by Willard Metcalf

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.
~ Christina Rossetti
(In the Bleak Midwinter)

Welcome Winter!

    1. Sybil, I have to admit I did not know this was made into a song! Poetry does make lovely lyrics at times…

    1. Me, too, Laurie. The scene takes me back to childhood and the magical moment when there is a new blanket of snow, and no creatures or people have yet left any tracks or footprints…

    1. Yes, that dull brown/black part of winter is troublesome – I wish we would get nothing but snow and that we never had to plow it – just hibernate inside or go out in our snowshoes!

  1. “Snow on snow”, what a lovely mental image that gives me. I will try to hold that image in my mind as our temperatures soar here during mid-summer. Hugs to you Barbara; I do hope that you and Tim can find some Christmas cheer this year. xxx

    1. Thank you, Joanne. I hope the snow image will help keep you feeling a little bit cooler during your summer months there down under! It’s been a subdued Christmas this year, the first one without my father. And the death of Tim’s brother is weighing heavy on our minds. Hope you had a lovely Christmas!

  2. Just beautiful, Barbara! I love Christina Rossetti’s poetry … have even consider writing about her, either a novel or shorter work. I will be back to catch up on your posts, but wanted to make a quick visit to wish you a blessed, warm and wonderful holiday! Lots of love, Diane XO ♥

    1. Thank you, Diane, I hope your holiday was warm and wonderful, too. And it sounds like you may have some snow, too – we weren’t so lucky in that department. It would be amazing to read a book about Christina Rossetti written by you, Diane! I know nothing about her. *hugs*

  3. Barbara, I just dropped in to wish you a happy new year! may you have a blessed year with loads of peace, happiness & good health! God bless you…

    1. A Happy New Year to you, too, Sonali! May yours be happy and adventure-filled, abundant in light, love and laughter!

  4. Hi. The Christina Rossetti poem is one that sticks with me and always makes me cry. I love the pairing with the Metcalf painting. It seems to show the silence of that falling snow. I am also liking your Pinterest Boards by the way! Jane

    1. Thank you, Jane! As you can probably tell, I’m using the waiting-for-the-baby-to-arrive time to catch up on responding to comments left on my blog so long ago. I do love the “bleak midwinter,” especially if I’m tucked inside with a cup of cocoa. The bleakness is pretty enough to make me cry, too.
