an everywhere of silver

5.11.25 ~ Carolina Beach

It looked like I might not get to see the ocean before we left Carolina Beach. (The kids got to go while I was sick.) Sunday morning was our last chance and we had quite a downpour as we were packing to go, with wind so strong it created waves on the lake. But after we checked out of the vacation rental the rain had calmed down to a drizzle so Larisa took Tim & me to the beach for a quick visit before lunch and heading home.

The Track called Land —

~ Emily Dickinson
(The Poems of Emily Dickinson, #931)

In a way it was nice to be on the beach in moody weather because we had the place to ourselves. Larisa took some pictures of us to mark the occasion.

On the way back to the car I spotted this little round leaf in the dune, standing vertically as if it was a little traffic sign. For some reason I was captivated. I took lots of pictures and even found a flower on one nearby.

largeleaf pennywort

Turns out largeleaf pennywort is a common native perennial that loves growing on the sandy dunes of the southeastern states. It was fun to learn about another plant found in this part of the world.

I had so much to think about on our way home. What a wonderful experience our anniversary was, and nothing at all like we might have imagined it was going to be 50 long years ago! šŸ’™

    1. Thank you, Ally. It was a long time in coming and yet the time seems to have disappeared in a flash.

  1. Oh, I’m so happy you got to go after all! Now you’re going to have to return when it’s sunny and warm. I like that round leaf, and I can almost hear the crashing of the waves.

    1. It would have been such a shame to have traveled all that way and then have missed the main attraction! Just hearing the waves before we could see them was a peaceful thrill. And noticing the pretty leaf was an unexpected treat.

    1. As expected, it was a little different from the New England shoreline, but also beautiful. šŸ’™

    1. Thank you, Rosie. I don’t enjoy having my picture taken but I’m glad now to have it. šŸ™‚

  2. I’m glad you made it to the beach after all Barbara and that little leaf is so unusual, seemingly begging you to take its picture. That is a great picture of you and Tim and you are color coordinated as well. All in all it was a very memorable way to celebrate your fiftieth wedding anniversary!

    1. Lol — color coordination happens all the time when you buy most of your clothes from LL Bean! So typical, Tim trying to stay cool in his shorts and me bundling up in my sweaters… I’m not used to seeing largeleaf pennyworts in sand dunes so that leaf definitely decided to make its presence known to me.

      1. That’s funny – well, the aqua tones made me think you and Tim knew you were seeing water and decided to dress in similar tones. That leaf definitely wanted to be noticed by you!

  3. I’m so glad to hear that the three of you got to go to the beach. I love the pictures that Larissa took of the two of you! That very large umbrella reminded me of the magic of Mary Poppins. šŸ˜‰

    1. Thank you, Teri! Tim is a big fan of big umbrellas and keeps one in the trunk of the car for just such occasions. He was using it mostly to protect the camera from getting wet in the drizzling rain, although it made for a great prop here. šŸ˜‰

  4. Love your beach photo! How sweet! Was this truly the first time you’ve been to the ocean since you moved to NC or did I misinterpret the title of that photo?

    1. Thank you, Karma! Yes, it was our first trip to the seashore in North Carolina. In February 2024 we did see the Atlantic while visiting our son and daughter-in-law in Georgia.
