an apple a day…

8.10.20 ~ Eastern Point

On Monday we tried to beat the humidity and went down to the beach early. Sometimes there’s no beating the humidity this time of year. Even at that early hour we lasted barely half an hour before Tim felt unwell. But before retreating I did see something new. A ring-billed gull had scavenged an apple and was diligently making a meal out of it.

The sun was trying to come out. Hazy, hot and humid before 8 am.

We got in the car, defeated. Turned on the air conditioner and then noticed a small colony of laughing gulls gathered in the parking lot! They’re back!

It was back home to the air-conditioning for us…

  1. Oh dear, I know that feeling well, when it seems there’s nowhere to hide from that stifling humidity. Poor Tim. πŸ™
Do Laughing Gulls make a laughing sound like our Laughing Kookaburras? I haven’t heard of them before.

    1. Well, having just listened to a kookaburra video yesterday I have to say they win the prize for sounding like laughter! These laughing gulls do sound a little like they’re laughing and they’re a little different-sounding from, but similar to other gulls. There are a couple of YouTube videos that you can try listening to. πŸ™‚

      1. I listened, and I see now why they are called “laughing” gulls! They make a continuous laughing sound between the usual seagull squawks. How amazing! πŸ™‚

        1. They are wonderful! Ours don’t vocalize much, but I think they’re adorable with their little black legs and smaller size. Wish they’d stand somewhere else besides the pavement for a better photographic backdrop. πŸ™‚

    1. Many people feel the same way as you, Leelah. When we met, my husband used to call gulls “flying rats.” But he’s gotten used to them since his wife loves them so much. πŸ™‚ I love the sounds they make…

    1. It sure is. Last month was the hottest July on record here and I have little doubt it will be the same for August. It’s interesting how air-conditioning bothers some people and helps others. So sorry it makes your chest hurt. Seeing the laughing gulls did make my day!

    1. Oh my goodness, no! Definitely not our house! It’s one of two big old historic houses on the city’s beach property. This one can be rented out for gatherings and for this year it’s serving as a polling station for our section of town. Sometimes I wonder what it was like to actually live there.

Tim recovered quickly back inside, but he’s looking forward to the better autumn air quality!
