lure of life

"White House at Night" by Vincent van Gogh
“White House at Night” by Vincent van Gogh

Tonight, the moon came out, it was nearly full.
Way down here on earth, I could feel it’s pull.
The weight of gravity or just the lure of life,
Made me want to leave my only home tonight.

I’m just wondering how we know where we belong?
Is it in the arc of the moon, leaving shadows on the lawn?
In the path of fireflies and a single bird at dawn?
Singing in between here and gone?

  1. Beautiful painting. I’ve never seen this Van Gogh before.

Thanks for sharing the Mary Chapin Carpenter song. This one was written for me:
I’m just wondering how we know where we belong?…..

    1. I know it’s not quite the same as visiting an art museum in person, but I could spend hours browsing through the paintings at WikiPaintings. The above Van Gogh is held at the State Hermitage Museum, in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Me, too, about the “Between Here & Gone” lyrics, Rosie. Wondering, too…

  2. I love this. I’ve never seen this particular painting before, and the lyrics to the song are just wonderful. It’s a question I often ask myself…

    1. Glad you enjoyed the painting and lyrics, Robin. I’ll have to keep digging at WikiPaintings and see what more treasures they have to offer. It seems like there are a lot of us wonder about these feelings – Mary Chapin has certainly tapped into something very deep and probably universal…
