Within my reach!
I could have touched!
I might have chanced that way!
Soft sauntered thro’ the village —
Sauntered as soft away!
So unsuspected Violets
Within the meadows go —
Too late for striving fingers
That passed, an hour ago!
~ Emily Dickinson
(The Poems of Emily Dickinson, #69)
I hadn’t read this one by Emily before — it’s lovely, as is the accompanying photo! Violets are such a springtime bloom — would that spring would hurry!!
I’m glad you enjoyed this one, Debbie! When Emily wrote about flowers it seemed to make her writing more lighthearted than some of her darker poems.
I hope we ease into Spring slowly to enjoy the emerging colors of Spring blooms like Violets, to see the tiny Crocuses emerge from the still-cold ground … we need a tease to get us to full-throttle Spring.
I agree with you, a long, nicely drawn out spring would be wonderful, giving us time to appreciate each bulb or ephemeral as it emerges. AI tells me that Medellín, Colombia, is famously known as the “City of Eternal Spring” because its location in the Andes Mountains provides a year-round, moderate climate. Would love to see those flowers!
What a treat that would be to live there Barbara! A friend of mine disliked Winter so much and had SAD on top of it, that he researched to find what place in the U.S. had the most sunshiny days per year. It was Las Cruces, New Mexico. He spent a Winter there, renting an apartment and hired a tutor to learn Spanish as he’d not spoken/used Spanish since high school and he was in his late 60s. He loved it there and his wife came to visit, they bought a house and moved there. He said “no more snow to shovel, grass to cut or yardwork to do.” They had gravel instead of grass as it was so hot there.
