Last night we attended a reception at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district Visions Art Show with Kat, to see which of her creations her art teacher had submitted. This is Kat’s interpretation of Totoro, an animated nature spirit from one of her favorite movies, My Neighbor Totoro, a sweet Japanese animated fantasy film about two young sisters, Satsuki and Mei, who meet Totoro and other friendly spirits while their mother is sick and in the hospital for an extended stay.
After the others went outside to watch Finn practicing cartwheels on the lawn, Kat and I lingered in the hallways to view and appreciate all the other art on display, so much creativity and variety from kindergarten to high school. We were the last to leave!
I’m not familiar with this movie, but I do like the colors Kat chose for her art project. It’s wonderful that schools expose kids to art (music, too!) at young ages. You never know when creativity will burst forth!
I didn’t remember this movie, but it came out in 1988 and apparently my daughter loved it as a child and shared it with her own daughter. I agree, it’s so important for children to be exposed to and to participate in the all the arts!

I used to love to go to see our kids’ art shows, pageants and open nights. Always so fun to see the talent and creativity.
Definitely one of the joys of parenthood and grandparenthood! And it was fun hearing what Kat thought of the different selections, too.
Kat is very creative! It is nice to see that kids from kindergarten to high school are being creative on paper, rather than on their devices.
Oh, believe me, they can be just as creative on their devices! Last summer Kat went to a video game design camp for a week and designed her own game. I was dazzled when we got to see the end result on the last day of camp.
That’s incredible … for some reason I was thinking Kat was more into nature and reading, rather than tech-related things. Talk about a well-rounded girl!

Totoro was a favorite character of my daughters’ when they were young. We always enjoyed that movie together. Thanks for the memory.
Ah, it’s nice to know others are fans of this movie, too. I’m fascinated by how different Kat’s interpretation of Totoro looks from the one in the movie.
