8 inches of snow!

12.17.20 ~ nisse by our river birch

Nothing captures our imagination more than the idea of nature spirits. Stories about them are found in every tradition upon the planet, and they never fail to touch us in some way. The truth is that most of us have had amazing nature spirit encounters, but we have either forgotten them, didn’t realize what they were at the time or allowed others to convince us that they weren’t real. But the truth is that Nature is one of the most powerful realms of spirit contact and guidance available to us.

  1. I’m with Frank, the quote is wonderful! And eight inches of snow – will it still be there for Christmas? This line – “the truth is that Nature is one of the most powerful realms of spirit contact and guidance available to us” – I could write a blog post – several, in fact – using that one line as inspiration.
    Stay warm. <3

    1. I doubt the snow cover will last until Christmas. Although it’s still cold enough to keep for now, it looks like temperatures will be warming up next week. 🙁 It’s so true that nature is a powerful realm of spirit contact and guidance, and for most of my life the only one. But lately words just aren’t coming to me as much as the urge to capture images is. I sense that I will be borrowing a lot of words in the coming weeks. 💙

    1. A contractor plows out the condo parking lot and shovels the sidewalks. Tim just had to brush the snow off our car and move it so they could plow our space. It was musical cars all day long in the parking lot. 🙂

  2. I’m with Joanne~ that quote really inspires me. 8 inches of snow! Wow! We’re holding our breath here in Illinois, with no snow at all so far. Well. A dusting a number of days ago, gone by noon. I’m no longer a fan of the stuff but I hope your’s is bringing you joy 🙂

    1. So happy you enjoyed the Ted Andrews quote, too, Melissa! Here on the coast we haven’t had enough snow to sneeze at for five years or so. Dustings like yours at the most. Farther inland they got 12 inches, somewhere in Vermont they got a record-breaking 44 inches! 8 inches is plenty for us to enjoy. 🙂

    1. The nisse has been waiting for a decent snow for years, Liz! I will make you a snowball when I next go out there. 🙂 Hope you’re enjoying the garden and continuing to heal well. 💙 (Thank you for the fruit!!!)

    1. So happy you enjoyed the Ted Andrews quote and the nisse in his element, Tara! I don’t know where you are located but I hope you’ll get all the snow your heart desires this winter. 🙂

        1. We went out for a walk but found that there was a layer of ice on top of the snow. Slipped a few times but didn’t fall, thankfully. It was a short walk! Now I’m wishing for a snowstorm that doesn’t finish off with sleet…

  3. Such a precious little guy in your snow. Love those nature spirits. Wondering if it will stick around for a while or is it supposed to warm up before Christmas?

    1. Pure magic… no footprints, he just appeared… 🙂 The snow cover will be here for a few days until the temperature warms up and melts it all (or most of it?) just in time for Christmas. Sigh…

    1. It’s so pretty to look at but we discovered it was coated with a layer of ice which made walking out there hazardous! Enjoying it from the great indoors now. 🙂

  4. Another beautiful quote Barbara … fitting for the snow. I like your “Nisse” and I remember you took the walk through town and photographed the front of the Scandinavian store … I’m guessing he is from that small shop. I guess it will be with you for a while unless you get a warm spell.

    1. Thank you, Linda. Yes, indeed, the nisse came from that little Scandinavian import shop, Bestemors. I bought him there years ago. I miss shopping there, especially at this time of year! I think they’re open but I don’t want to take any chances. Warm spell coming soon, I’m afraid, just in time for Christmas, of course. 😉

      1. I thought perhaps that’s where he came from Barbara. I noticed the store in that post. Hope you got out for a walk today. We had an ugly day that began with freezing fog, drizzle and it was warm all day, but not inviting out at all. We have almost 50 degrees on Wednesday but Christmas Eve will have rain, snow and then cold – ugly weather they are saying. I’m glad I am not scurrying around to meet my goal anymore. With my Jacquie Lawson subscription I got an Advent calendar. This year’s is really exquisite and is all Nordic inspired and it loads onto your desktop and they have a different video activity pertaining to Nordic traditions, some recipes, and scenes to open every day … I am enjoying it.

        1. Looks like we won’t be taking any walks until this slippery ice melts away. Shouldn’t take too long now — it’s above freezing this morning and is supposed to be in the 50s by Thursday. No white Christmas, a big rainstorm instead! Your weather forecast doesn’t sound like it will be much better. I’ll be focusing on yoga for a while! 🙂 Your Nordic inspired online Advent calendar sounds pretty cool! Enjoy!

          1. We’ll get that slippery ice starting Thursday/Friday. Likely no walks for me either, so tomorrow’s walk with our high of 50 degrees will have to be savored. This weather is just crazy isn’t it? I am glad I finished my goal early so that I could get in walks if I could and didn’t need to have angst about it. I went to the Park last Saturday and the perimeter path was icy in spots, so I walked on the snowy grass and in the streets to get to/from the Park. Now, with so many people working from home, the streets are less congested in the morning and the streets were deserted last Saturday morning. They have done a great job on this Nordic calendar Barbara … there is new content for each day, plus facts and figures, music just if you want to log on anytime. I took one yoga class and did horribly at it because I was the only newbie in the class – everyone knew the teacher, were advanced to begin with. I took a Pilates class, same teacher, and once again, I was the only newbie. I quit, got a refund and bought yoga and pilates DVDs and a portable DVD player to watch and learn. Don’t ask how that worked out. I would like to learn someday – I know it is good for balance and for stress.

          2. The weather has been crazy all year between the tropical storms, the drought and the nor’easters… Now we’re expecting gale force winds and 3 inches of rain on Christmas. Perfect ending for 2020 it would seem. Might get a walk in Thursday before the tempest arrives… It’s good you’ve reached your goal and can relax and take walks when the weather is favorable. 🙂 I took up yoga in the spring of 2019, a gentle chair yoga for seniors on DVD that I can do by myself in my living room. I love it! It’s helped my knees and my flexibility and my sense of well-being so much. I can get up and down off the floor to play with my grandchildren so much better and faster. I still have trouble with balance and still need the chair but I’m not competing with anyone and am happy with the results.

  5. I so enjoyed the Ted Andrews quote, Barbara. Very thought-provoking and profound and a great reminder to let the magic in. Your little gnome in the snow was a smile-inducing greeting to this marvelous, gentle post. Thank you.

    1. You’re so welcome, Jet! This is a good time of year to let the magic in, especially in this year when everyone’s holiday plans are being altered by the pandemic. I’m glad the appearance of my nisse/gnome brightened your day. 🙂
