changing ocean tides

“Children Playing on the Beach” by Mary Cassatt

Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life
Well, I’ve been afraid of changing
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you get bolder
Even children get older
And I’m getting older too
~ Stevie Nicks

  1. I’m with Ron Kononchik, I’ve always appreciated Mary Cassatt’s art. And you’ve paired “Children Playing on the Beach” beautifully with Stevie Nicks lyrics from “Landslide.”

    1. Thank you, Laurie. I’m looking forward to getting some pictures of my own granddaughter playing on the beach in the next few years…

  2. Just reading those lyrics gives me goosebumps, I love the song “Landslide” so much, and old style photos of children on the beach are a huge favourite too. All in all, I LOVE this post ~ thank you Barbara. <3

    1. You’re so welcome, Joanne! I get teary-eyed and goose-bumpy every time I hear the song, too. It came out the year my first baby was born and I did “build my life around him.” When he got married I chose it for our mother-son dance. 🙂

    1. One of the wonders of the internet (for me, anyway) is WikiArt – sometimes I get lost for hours browsing the galleries there. Cassatt did capture beautifully how absorbed the little girls were as they played in the sand.

  3. My friend and I went to Fundy yesterday and sat by the shore simply watching the tide come in for an hour and then go back out for an hour. Keep in mind the tides there go up and down 40 ft in 6 hours …

    1. Oh Sybil, I can only imagine how beautifully breathtaking that must have been. I may have told you this before, but when my mother was in college she went camping near the Bay of Fundy with a friend and she was awe-struck. The way her eyes lit up when she told me about it has made me want to go see it for myself ever since. I hope we will make it in 2016 (after Germany & Norway in 2015)!!!

    1. Thank you, Diane. Stevie Nick’s rendition will always be the best, but I also enjoyed the Dixie Chicks’ cover of it. *hugs*

  4. Ahhh, children playing in the sand. So innocent, so present, so aware of what exists right in front of them. Thinking now of my special childhood beach along Lake Huron and your experience along Cape Cod. Precious indeed.

    1. There is something special about those childhood moments and memories of playing in the sand on my seashore and your lakeshore… So many times there I had the feeling that time was standing still, I didn’t think of it in terms of being present, but now I see that is what it was…

    1. I love Fleetwood Mac, too. Stevie Nicks has such a compelling presence when performing – I love watching her on YouTube, too. 🙂
