I believe that mycelium is the neurological network of nature. Interlacing mosaics of mycelium infuse habitats with information-sharing membranes. These membranes are aware, react to change, and collectively have the long-term health of the host environment in mind. The mycelium stays in constant molecular communication with its environment, devising diverse enzymatic and chemical responses to complex challenges.

    1. You’re welcome, Anne! Once in a while I listen to Stamets’ talk to renew my enthusiasm for how mushrooms could be used to clean up a lot of our environmental messes…

    1. Yes, indeed! I just found your comment in my spam box – I hope that doesn’t happen much. Lately I’ve been checking through more carefully rather than emptying it without doing so first…

  1. Hi,
Very interesting facts about mushrooms, also a great photo that you chose, it seems it must be the perfect spot for them, as there certainly looks like a few growing well in that area.

    1. I wonder what those particular mushrooms are up to! πŸ˜‰ The photo makes me think that this is what a mushroom forest must look like to a bug! πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks, Sheryl! I have the feeling that we are just beginning to learn what wondrous things mushrooms will be able to help us with!

  2. The nature is wonderful indeed. So many interesting facts to discover. Thanks for sharing about the Mycelium. That’s a nicely captured picture. How little things protect and do wonders being a part of the earth!

    1. You’re welcome, Sonali! When we think of the very small and the very large it seems that there will be no end to the wonders we will discover in nature. It’s a good thing we are such curious creatures and that we will never stop exploring because there will always be more to learn!

  3. Mushrooms and toadstools do have magical qualities, don’t they? I’m thinking about even fairy tales, where fairies dance around the toadstools and make magic happen. I believe mushroom have some incredible vitamins and healing properties too, when eaten (so long as you don’t eat the wrong variety!) The myceliums sound as if they have their own personalities as well!

    1. Magic is science and logic is wonder, at least in my mind! Edible mushrooms are full of Vitamin D, more than any other vegetable in the produce department. We try to eat as many as we can. It has been said that mycelium networks resemble the networks found in the human brain – perhaps they make up the brain of Mother Earth. So many possibilities!

  4. To think…that mushrooms can save the world! **smile** I believe. Or perhaps the world is already “saved” and the mushrooms are here to tell us so.

    1. I think of it every time I see a mushroom! πŸ™‚ How kind of them to appear to remind us…

    1. Perhaps some day I will put my camera on the ground in a mushroom forest and see what kind of presence the camera can capture! πŸ™‚
