nobody!

Emily Dickinson

So asked Emily Dickinson…

My original plans for this day were canceled due to very high humidity. So I decided to use the day to play with the appearance of this blog. Once I got started it turned into something of a major renovation. First I tried the new theme, Koi, with my background, but it just didn’t feel right. Finally decided to use Structure, again, the same theme I used for my family history and quote collection sites. I might as well…

I like Structure’s fonts and the ability to add a custom background. And the wide-screen! (Pure white computer screens are hard on my eyes, and if I’m not careful the glare can trigger a migraine.) It was wonderful spending hours on end creating a new home for my blog!

Treated myself to some freshly brewed iced tea, and put it in one of the thick blue hand blown glass goblets we bought in Provincetown several years ago. (Hadn’t used them in a long while…)

At quarter to two I didn’t notice anything different, nor did anyone else down here on the Connecticut coastline. But an hour inland they felt an earthquake that was 5.0 magnitude on the border of Ontario and Quebec.

Everything is not quite done – still working on the “about me” page. That’s the toughest one. Am I somebody? But dear Emily’s words make me smile and keep on going…

Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there’s a pair of us!
Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one’s name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!

  1. B.

I am not sure how to respond to this blog? I am thinking! It is late in the day for me and has been hot as heck so mindful thoughts are difficult to come by.
I will check back with you later!

    1. No need to respond, Jeff! I just added the rest of the poem to the post to help reveal the humor in Emily’s poem. All day long I had feelings of ambivalence about how much to reveal about myself on the “about me” home page. But I was in a playful mood and I kept thinking of the poem, hoping I didn’t sound like the Frog tooting his own horn to the folks in the Blog, oh, I mean Bog…. An added bonus is that it’s June, so it seems like a good time to say: “This is me!”

Hope you get some relief from the heat and humidity. I plan to venture out there soon and then rush back home from food shopping…

  2. Very beautifully done… your blog renovation. Especially the “about me” It seems so fitting to me(even with as little as I know about you) that deer is your totem animal. In the NA culture deer represents…
Compassion, peace, intellectual, gentle, caring, kind, subtlety, gracefulness, femininity, gentleness, innocence, and seller of adventure. Wonderful!!

    1. Thank you, Julie! Hmm… “seller of adventure” I hadn’t heard before! Wait until I tell Larisa – she thinks I’m such a homebody! (Well, I am!) I feel grateful to have deer as my spirit guide, all those representations mean a lot to me.

  3. You’re nobody, I’m nobody, Jeff’s nobody, Julie’s nobody. We’re all nobody, no-thing! It’s clear as a bell when we’re meditating that we’re no-thing. HOWEVER, when we emerge from all that oneness, here is a delightful Barbara sharing herself and her something-ness so beautifully. thank you! Your somethingness enlarges our world. It does. 🙂

    1. You put it so well, Kathy, thank you! I love knowing we are all one, and I appreciate your kind thoughts about my sharing. Our sharing…

  4. Oh these themes can be a pain for ones eyes, sometimes, can’t they? I don’t get migraines much these days as this is one of the unexpected fringe benefits I’ve experience of taking medication for high blood pressure (well, the one I’m on, anyway. I’ve no idea if it would have this effect on anyone else.) but what I tend to do is have the monitor brightness turned way down low, which I find makes white backgrounds much easier on the eyes.

I’m planning a second blog here on WordPress and also was drawn to the Koi theme but it didn’t suit me, either. I’ve gone for one (I think, though I might change my mind) which has fully customisable colours on header. I chanced upon a combination of colours that reflect exactly what I love, visually, so went for that.

Your choice here, looks fine. Sorry I’ve not commented before, will try to from now on.
    🙂

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Val! Yes, the medication I’m on for high blood pressure greatly reduced the frequency of my migraines, too. I have no idea how to turn down the brightness on my monitor, will have to ask Tech Support (husband) when he gets home. 🙂 Great idea! (Watch, he’ll probably tell me he’s already set it down as far as it will go…)

It is so nice to find the right color combination and font!! Looking forward to your second blog! 🙂
