crunch and rustle of leaves

“Autumn Morning” by Grigoriy Myasoyedov

A few days ago, I walked along the edge of the lake and was treated to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made. The acoustics of this season are different, and all sounds, no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air.

    1. Summer, be gone! For good! I’ve had more than my fill of yellow jackets and mosquitoes. Come first frost and kill them all!

      1. Yes, I stewed and fretted after I got eaten alive in a small woodsy area two weekends ago due to Michigan’s two mosquito viruses. It will be worse this weekend after a two-day torrential downpour.

        1. We’ve had several cases of West Nile virus in Connecticut this year. And first frost isn’t due until October 19 or so. Too much rain this summer and the mosquitoes are having a heyday. (I should have appreciated last year’s drought more!)

          1. I feel cheated by the Summer. I have a small painting project, trim on the side door frame and have not been able to do the project in two years – it’s either too hot, too humid and if it’s cool, it’s windy and I don’t dust etc. settling onto white trim. Those coolish days have been so few and far between. Today we got to 82 degrees, 12 degrees above normal – tomorrow is normal. The ebbs and flows in our weather are just abysmal. That’s a way off for the first frost and soon we’ll be worrying about black ice or sliding on slick leaves. Sigh. Our drought in April and May seems like eons ago.

          2. Oh dear, I hope you get a good day for painting your door frame sometime this autumn. Sorry to hear you’re still getting temps in the 80s. We haven’t seen temps like that in weeks! Winter may be cold, but at least there are no bugs to contend with. πŸ˜‰ Hope you get some nice lingering autumn days soon. *hugs*

    1. Thank you, Eliza! πŸ™‚ I have just discovered Eric Sloane and am looking forward to reading more of his work soon.

  1. Happy Autumn πŸ‚ Barbara! Gorgeous pic and poetry post!!
I watched the harvest moon rise above the live oak trees. My first fondest memory of fall color was a visit to Chicago. I had never seen anything like it. Later in life, I lived in Colorado. The aspen trees are a delight in color and sound. Trees are just wonderful; truth be told. I’ve been enjoying your blog and conversations that follow. You bring happiness to my heart.

    1. Wishing you a Happy Autumn, too, TD! πŸ‚ That must have been wonderful to see the Harvest Moon rise over your oak trees! We didn’t see it here. Not this year. But we did go down to the beach and enjoy marvelling at the extra high tide. I’ve seen stunning pictures of Colorado’s aspen trees in the fall. How lucky you were to live there and enjoy them for the whole season. I love trees, too, they send out such a peaceful and wise energy, and in autumn, even more so.

    1. Me, too, Leelah! I feel like the woods are inviting me in there for a long walk and I can almost smell the cool crisp autumn air. πŸ‚

    1. My friend who lives in North Carolina tells me that her fall colors are just as beautiful as ours here in New England are but I’m not convinced just yet!

    1. Thank you, Debbie! I bet Monkey will have loads of fun romping around in the leaves! 🍁 I hope you get some good pictures!
