it’s a blizzard

1.29.22

Our nor’easter here in southeastern Connecticut has now been an official blizzard for the past five hours. The way the wind is blowing the snow into drifts it’s hard to say how many inches we have, maybe 14 inches so far? The snow is still coming down, fast and furious.

In the above picture, on the ancestors chair we have our two groundhogs waiting patiently to see what the sun will be doing on Groundhog Day. On the little stool sits Tim’s webcam which is providing a live snowstorm stream to our kids and his brothers, who have all moved far far away from Connecticut many years ago.

Notice how high the snow is on our little outdoor dining table!

    1. The last time we had a blizzard was in 2015 and then we got 24 inches. I’m not sure what the official total will be for this one but I’m guessing it will be around 14 inches.

        1. I enjoy a good snow storm but a blizzard is a little too much! Seems like feast or famine in the snow department these days. For me, the heat and humidity down south makes me glad I live up north. 🙂

          1. I loved living out West, especially in Arizona. No humidity to worry about out there. The humidity in the Summer is awful here.

          2. My sister lived in New Mexico for quite a few years. She was forever complaining that it was too hot and dry. It’s interesting how we all have our differing preferences. 🙂 I can’t bear the humidity when visiting my daughter in North Carolina.

  1. Both very exciting – and scary, i would say
we have a formidable storm in Norway now – and there were quite a few people crowding to watch the huge waves breaking down in the harbor – like being on the brink of disaster, but maybe 1 meter on the safe side – sending good wishes to you in your cosy house

    1. Thank you, Leelah. I bet you have some very impressive winter storms there in Norway! When we visited in May there was one the night before we took a train from Oslo to Myrdal. There had been an avalanche which was blocking the track between Myrdal and Bergen. It didn’t affect us because we were getting off in Myrdal. But everyone going to Bergen got off in Myrdal, too, and made the next train ride down to Flåm more crowded than it otherwise might have been. And it was so cold in May!

  2. I do say that you had lucky crossed fingers for snow! And there it is a blizzard of snow!!

Absolutely love that you set up the two groundhogs waiting patiently to see what the sun will do? I’m grinning from ear to ear with you. Curiosity in me is wondering what audiobook is entertaining you and will there be tiny snowmen in your future…

    1. Yes, my wish for snow was more than granted! It’s been seven years since we’ve had a blizzard but I would have been content with much less excitement. I hope to post about the groundhogs and their story on Groundhog Day, stay tuned! Right now I’m reading “The Marriage of Opposites” by Alice Hoffman. Since the wind chill is below zero right now I don’t think I will go out there to build a snowman!

  3. Oh, my, you certainly are getting the brunt of the storm! (I love that you livestream it for your kids. 🙂 ) The windchill is pretty fierce, but it isn’t gusting all that much here and we only have a few inches of really fine crystals. I went out this afternoon (all geared up), walked our trail and shoveled the walk and deck and was sweating by the time I came in. I guess I overdressed!

    1. You must have bundled up well to endure these wind chills AND work up a sweat! I’m still trying to convince myself to get out there and shovel the snow off of the balcony… Tim loves sharing the weather with his family. He just bought a new weather station for the balcony and I was so relieved to learn that it was wireless. The wires from the webcams drive me crazy. 🙂

  4. Barbara and Tim, I’m glad your both safe up there with the big storm hitting the region.
It definitly got more than us or maybe it’s just the wind making piles.
We may have got 7-10 inches down here in NJ… More than we have had in sometime.

    1. So happy to hear from you Jeff, and to know you’re safe and sound down there, too. I was very surprised when the official measurement of 21.5 inches for Groton came in. The wind made it impossible to guess with any accuracy but looking outside today the volume of snow is more apparent. 🙂

  5. So happy to see a post from you, Barbara, oh my, that pile on your little table is high! I hope the winds don’t howl all night for you and the storm swings out to sea. Stay safe and warm!

    1. Well, the storm definitely did not go out to sea! We had blizzard winds for 8 hours here in Groton but we didn’t lose power so we weren’t terribly inconvenienced. Not sure when we’ll actually get out and about, though…

      1. Glad to hear you made it through the brunt. How many inches did you get? This morning here it is full sunshine and all bright white, no wind at all. So pretty! I’ve been bird photographing already from my back door, hehe.

        1. We got 21.5 inches! It was sunny the day after here, too, but still bitterly cold. Have yet to see a bird, though. They must have abandoned our trees and found some feeders somewhere else in the neighborhood. Enjoy your “back door” photography!

    1. Thank you, Mary, and a warm welcome to my blog! (It’s beautiful, but very cold — I still haven’t gone out there…)

      1. I am sitting here with my coffee listening to the rain and sleet, thinking it is going to be cold when i go feed all the cats that come to get a meal, i hope they are all in the areas where i put blankets, heat lights and wrapped plant blankets to keep them warm and dry. it is a dreary day already, though it is beautiful too 🙂 and you’re welcome, i come by when i have a little time to wander, Thank you Barbara for stopping in my thoughts .. Stay warm, Take Care… You Matter
        Blessings …

        1. How thoughtful and kind of you to help the cats in your neighborhood. We had a cat come sit on our porch for a few days but he looked well fed and cared for so we hoped he found his way home. Snuggling up on the couch with a warm cup of tea and a good book is a perfect way to spend a dreary winter day. A little more snow and a little less freezing rain would be nice. 🙂 Warm blessings to you, too.

          1. Thank You, i have never been able to say no to strays, i think maybe because i always was one 🙂 your cat probably came to say hello:) your day sounds perfect.

            Take Care…You Matter

  6. So happy to hear you got your blizzard and its accompanying snow! Wa-hoo! And how cool you can stream the storm to family members. Have never thought of doing that before.

    1. Thanks, Kathy! That was a lot more snow than I bargained for! My sister, about 50 miles north of us, only got 5 inches. (They usually get more than us…) Tim comes up with many ideas when it comes to uses for all his various gadgets. 😉

  7. I’m still catching up in Reader and saw I missed this one and jumped ahead to the last post – 21.5 inches. Oh my … I am dreading out projected 12-18-inch snowfall we are getting. I’d better start doing stretches now. That is incredible with the snow piling up like that!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Linda! I just found your comment. I imagine you’re in the thick of it now, best wishes for staying safe and warm through your storm, my friend. ❄️

      1. Thank you Barbara and I looked out seeing flakes fast and furiously flying and I worry about the furnace pipe … the pipe had to be resized (bigger) after nine years of them finally figuring out while the furnace didn’t cycle properly and shutting itself off. So I worried “would it let too much snow in – should I worry about it causing a C02 problem?” I am a first-class weather worrier Barbara.

        1. Sorry to hear you were having problems with your furnace pipe. My sister was having problems with their hot water heater for a few weeks and finally got some service. Seems like the heating and plumbing companies have quite a backlog of customer problems to fix. There’s a saying, though, Linda, if you’re not worried you’re not paying attention… Better to be worried than oblivious. I am a worrier, too.

          1. I worry about everything and the idea that snow could get into the furnace pipe and cause a carbon monoxide issue worries me … they didn’t explain that when they were touting the benefits of a high efficiency furnace. I like that saying and it fits the bill Barbara. Erratic weather the past few years has made me a bigger weather worrier than ever before.

          2. When I hear on the news stories about carbon monoxide poisoning I feel grateful to have electric heat. And when I hear about natural gas explosions I feel grateful for having an electric stove. But our condo was built in the 70s and has aluminum wiring, which can pose an increased fire hazard. So now I worry about that…
