winter appointments…

“Winter Light” by Ann Crane

I frequently tramped eight or ten miles through the deepest snow to keep an appointment with a beech tree, or a yellow birch, or an old acquaintance among the pines.

Oh! where do fairies hide their heads,
When snow lies on the hills?
When frost has spoiled their mossy beds,
And crystallized their rills:
Beneath the moon they cannot trip
In circles o’er the plain:
And draughts of dew they cannot sip,
Till green leaves come again.

Keeping the Pathway Open

When one soul meets another kindred soul, a great surge of energy rushes through the weaving of the universe as an important connection is made.  In the unexplored regions of human consciousness, another light has come on, revealing shared territory.  This is the work of dedicated souls on the spiritual path: their individual light illumines the universe for everyone, brings hope, and keeps open the pathway to understanding.  This sacred trust is maintained by all who have consecrated their existence to spiritual wisdom; it is a kinship that runs like a golden chain from one age to another.  That golden chain comes now into our hands, a sacred trust not only to our ancestors but to our descendants and every inhabitant of the universe.  It is our turn to make the next link, trusting that others in turn will complete the circle until the whole cosmos is connected in one bond.

Two years ago on this day, Tim and I drove down to Avery Point to see the beauty of a recent snowfall by the water.  I was trying to photograph the lighthouse, framed by a tree’s branches and the blanket of snow.  After snapping the shot I looked on the view screen and gasped in surprise!  While I had seen orbs in the photos of others before, and was curious about the phenomena, this was the first time orbs had appeared in one of my own photos!  And there were so many of them!

As a person who has in the past often gotten myself into trouble by insisting on absolute answers to all questions, this marked one of the first times I was content to accept a gift of mystery and magic from the universe without demanding an explanation, satisfied to embrace not knowing.  My intuition has some ideas but I’m not clinging to any particular theory, scientific or mystical.

If you have any orb pictures you’d like to share, please let me know.  Perhaps I will post them here on my blog, or link to them on your blog.  I have since had a few more pictures with orbs in them, though none as spectacular as this first one!  (see also Snowiest Month Ever and Sultry Midsummer and A Blue Thread)

woods fill up with snow…

“Winter” by Ivan Shishkin

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Winter Solstice

“Yule Goat” by John Bauer

Keep me safe and hold me tight
Let the candle burn all night
Tomorrow welcome back the light
It was longest night of the year

We press our faces to the glass
And see our little lives go past
Wave to shadows that we cast
On the longest night of the year

Make a vow when Solstice comes
To find the Light in everyone
Keep the faith and bang the drum
On the longest night of the year

~ Mary Chapin Carpenter
♫ (Longest Night of the Year) ♫

LADY dear, if Fairies may
For a moment lay aside
Cunning tricks and elfish play,
‘Tis at happy Christmas-tide.

We have heard the children say -
Gentle children, whom we love -
Long ago, on Christmas Day,
Came a message from above.

Still, as Christmas-tide comes round,
They remember it again -
Echo still the joyful sound,
‘Peace on earth, good-will to men.’

Yet the hearts must child-like be
Where such heavenly guests abide.
Unto children, in their glee,
All the year is Christmas-tide.

Thus, forgetting tricks and play
For a moment, Lady dear,
We would wish you, if we may,
Merry Christmas, glad New Year.

Lines on the Sky

“Lines on the Sky” by Ane Lisbet Smedås

the whole world, wide
grazing land, the open spaces
wind across the land
and the sky, blue, high

My friend Ane Lisbet lives in Norway and she took this amazing picture there on Saturday.

This is turning into a winter for the record books.  I can’t remember the last time the snow didn’t melt between snowstorms.  Connecticut is usually pretty drab, brown and gray for most of the season, with an occasional snowstorm to punctuate the monotony.  It usually rains at least as often as it snows.  I’m grateful, though, for the current wonder of looking out the window each morning and seeing snow on the ground.  My view isn’t as spectacular as Ane Lisbet’s, but it’s my own little wonderland.

Last night Nate & Shea picked us up in their snow-worthy Jeep and took us out to dinner at Olive Garden – they now have a gluten-free menu.  For a Monday night, the place was packed!  We had a window seat and I commented that inside it felt like Italy but looking outside and seeing mounds of plowed snow gave us a reality check.  :)  We had a wonderful time!

When we got home we were so cold we climbed under the blankets with our clothes on and snuggled until I warmed up and Tim fell asleep.  We had hats, gloves and extra layers on, but just walking from the nice warm Jeep to our front door chilled us to the bone.  Probably all our blood had gone to our stomachs to digest the meal.

This morning it was 18°F – a heat wave!  Swept a couple of inches of new snow off of the car in the dark for Tim.  He left before sunrise…  Big storm due tomorrow night.  Must get food shopping done soon…

We sleep, and at length awake to the still reality of a winter morning.  The snow lies warm as cotton or down upon the window-sill; the broadened sash and frosted panes admit a dim and private light, which enhances the snug cheer within.  The stillness of the morning is impressive…  From the eaves and fences hang stalactites of snow, and in the yard stand stalagmites covering some concealed core.  The trees and shrubs rear white arms to the sky on every side; and where were walls and fences we see fantastic forms stretching in the frolic gambols across the dusky landscape, as if nature had strewn her fresh designs over the fields by night as models for man’s art.

Winter by the Sea

We had a lovely snowfall last night, the thick wet kind that sticks to and stays on the trees.  After I shoveled the car out, we took off to do many errands.  Everywhere we drove we were treated to scenes from a winter wonderland.

This little house across the street from us is always a pleasure to see when I open the shades in the morning.  The color of it lets me imagine I am in Scandinavia, and the architecture reminds me of Cape Cod.  (It’s called a ¾ Cape Cod house, because two windows are on one side of the front door, and one window is on the other side.)

A new batch of snow is starting to fall as I write this, but all errands are done and we’re tucked inside with a fresh supply of hot chocolate and marshmallows.  Life is good!
